Description
A pink/mauve violet bloom sits shining in its full glory amidst its fellow blooms. Minute details of the bloom are apparent in this close-up.
Violets (Viola sp.) are herbaceous perennials grown for their sweet-scented, delicate flowers. These low-growing, clumping plants bloom for just a few weeks in spring and summer, but their heart-shaped foliage decorates the garden throughout the year. Violets grow in a wide variety of habitats, from moist woodlands, to coastal bluffs and dry, rocky outcroppings.
Violets grow 6 to 12 inches high and wide. Flower colors include blue, purple, red, pink, white and yellow, with a few bicolored varieties. Each flower has five petals, the lower of which is used as a landing pad by pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. Most violets have two flower types on the same plant. One type consists of a visible bloom that appears atop long stems and sets seed when pollinated. The other flower type is short-stemmed and inconspicuous, and able to set a large amount of seed without pollination.
