A beautiful view looking from the Fiery Furnace overlook in Arches National Park (Utah) across Cache Valley toward the La Sal mountains to the south of Moab, Utah. The Fiery Furnace is actually behind the photographer in this image. There is snow on the mountains as the result of the first snowfall of the season in early November. This snow didn't last longer than 1 week. High dynamic range image.
The Fiery Furnace overlook is at the trailhead for the trail of the same name. Actually, the Fiery Furnace belies its name and remains fairly cool even in midsummer due to the many shady canyons. Instead, the area was named for the reddish glow it often takes on at sunset which resembles a furnace
From the NPS website: The Fiery Furnace is a labyrinth of narrow sandstone canyons and fins. There are no marked trails and the area has suffered resource damage due to increased visitation. Hikers who want to explore the Fiery Furnace are encouraged to sign up for a ranger-guided hike. The hike is approximately 2 1/2 hours long.
From Utah.com: The Fiery Furnace is routinely described as a maze, and that metaphor is fitting. A continuation of the shattered fins that make up the Devils Garden area to the west, the Furnace holds twisting and turning canyons, slot canyons, and gorges that can easily disorient even seasoned canyoneers. The sandstone takes the shape of many interesting formations, including arches, overhangs, and passages. There is no established trail within the furnace, and hikers can technically rove as many miles as they desire, crossing and recrossing their own tracks. The ranger-guided tour is approximately two miles long however.
