Description
When in Dead Horse Point State Park, outside of Moab, Utah, the view is usually toward Dead Horse Point. But from the trail near the overlook, there is an incredible view toward the La Sal mountains to the south. The view encompasses some of the Colorado River, as it flows between Moab and Dead Horse Point. Many geologic layers are in view - a geologist's dream!
The bright blue bodies of water near the center of the image are the evaporation ponds at the potash mine. Deposits of salt occur in the Paradox Formation, on ton of which the ponds sit, are pumped into the shallow, vinyl-lined pond you see. Blue dye is added to speed up evaporation. The dry salt is then harvested and refined to be used in plant fertilizer.
This view, while not as unique as Dead Horse Point, is equally compelling to the viewer.
