Description
Two black ravens perch high in a bare tree on a sunny winter day in Canyonlands National Park. These two were found near Buck Canyon overlook in Island in the Sky.
Ravens are found throughout most of North America. As the largest member of the crow family, they average a wingspan of 46-56 inches. Their black feathers exhibit a metallic sheen of purple or violet in the right light. They are pretty much omnivorous, eating meat, grain, fruit, etc. Like crows, they can learn to imitate various sounds, including the human voice.
Ravens seem to be ubiquitous in Canyonlands, and will even follow visitors from overlook to overlook, always on the lookout for a handout of a snack. As with all wild animals, it is not a good idea to feed them.
