Description
It was a beautiful sunny, although cold and windy, day when we drove out to the end of Long Beach Island, near Barnegat, New Jersey. The Barnegat Lighthouse, colloquially known as "Old Barney", is a historic lighthouse located in Barnegat Lighthouse State Park on the northern tip of Long Beach Island, on the south side of Barnegat Inlet.
Originally lit on January 1, 1859, the lighthouse has been through numerous iterations, and is now a first-order light, based on height and strength of the light. The light creates a single beam that can be visible for up to 22 miles. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Barnegat Lighthouse in 1971. Its image appears on the New Jersey "Shore Conservation" license plates.
A panoramic view of Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island awaits visitors at the top of Barnegat Lighthouse. Visitors can also catch the views from the top without climbing the 217 steps thanks to four cameras that transmit live images of the view to a display in the adjacent Interpretive Center.
